System Breakthrough Project - Revolutionize how AI is developed and validated for health

Health-AI Logo

The Health-AI project addresses the limited accessibility and availability of health data within the Dutch health sector, hindering AI applications' development. Facing issues like administrative inefficiencies and workforce retention, the project aligns with the 2022 "Integraal Zorgakkoord" (IZA), projecting future workforce needs and health cost increases. AI offers solutions, optimizing resources, enhancing patient involvement, and streamlining tasks, but privacy concerns surround patient data access.

The project proposes a transformative solution through federated AI development and validation, establishing a secure ecosystem for collaboration among stakeholders. It focuses on data provision, federated infrastructure, AI algorithm development, privacy preservation, use cases, and an open-source ethos. The goal is to revolutionize data accessibility for cost-effective, efficient, and equitable health delivery, benefiting both individuals and the Netherlands' economic well-being.

In the proof-of-concept phase, a functional federated data infrastructure was demonstrated, allowing AI algorithm training without data sharing. Further development is crucial to bridge the knowledge-translation gap, enabling practical implementation and validation.

The Health-AI project aims to unlock the potential of federated AI learning from sensitive data, fostering innovation, economic growth, and improved health outcomes. And not just for health, federated AI development and validation from sensitive data is of utmost outspoken interest to other sectors including the logistics, intelligence, crime, financial and energy sector.

The funding for this project was started in 2025 and funded by the AI Coalition for the Netherlands (AIC4NL).
