CODA - Center for Ophtalmology Data Analytics at Aravind

The increasing availability of digital clinical data has paved the way for Artificial Intelligence applications in the field of ophthalmology, holding the potential to enhance processes related to diagnostic and therapeutic eye care. However, challenges arise due to the limited availability of substantial volumes of high-quality data and the insufficient involvement of domain experts such as ophthalmologists.

We are joining forces with Aravind to establish the Center for Ophthalmology Data Analytics at Aravind. This research-oriented initiative combines Aravind's unique data resources and clinical expertise with our federated data infrastructure and data science capabilities, positioning the center at the forefront of AI research in ophthalmology.

The project has three specific aims. Firstly, to create an infrastructure at Aravind that transforms currently dispersed routine clinical data into Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) data. Secondly, to jointly develop the necessary tools and expertise to cover all phases of the AI research process. Lastly, to develop two real and relevant AI applications from Aravind data—one focused on subretinal fluid using optical coherence images and another on detecting keratoconus from corneal surface scans.

The funding for this project, awarded in 2023, is provided by Velux Stiftung, Switzerland.
