Topspecialistische Zorg en Onderzoek - Sustainable Advancement of Specialized Radiotherapy

This innovative initiative is dedicated to minimizing the side effects of radiation on vital organs, with a primary focus on enhancing the overall quality of patients' lives. The project comprises three key medical initiatives, each aimed at reducing side effects in specific areas: the heart, the brain, and the rectum.

To achieve optimal preservation of function, the project leverages predictive models in both standard photon therapy and new proton therapy. Additionally, there is a commitment to developing educational resources for referring physicians about proton therapy for informed decision-making. 

Cancer treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach, where each discipline separately registers and stores patient data. The project seeks to establish a 'Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR),' privacy-respecting data infrastructure. This infrastructure aims to streamline patient information across disciplines, eliminating the need for patients to repeatedly provide their medical history and ensuring that all practitioners have access to a comprehensive patient dossier.

This initiative has received support in the form of a grant from ZonMw in 2020.
