Dutch Dementia Cohort Consortium - The path towards primary prevention of dementia
Dementia is a complex condition with multiple causes. Both genetic factors and environmental factors cause changes in the brain that ultimately lead to dementia. It is impossible to investigate all these factors in a single cohort. By sharing, harmonizing, and collectively studying data from various existing cohorts, the new Dutch Consortium of Dementia Cohorts (NCDC) aims to better understand how the disease develops. In this way, new points of intervention for dementia prevention can be identified.
The NCDC conducts research on dementia prevention based on data collected over a long period in 9 Dutch cohorts. For the study on dementia prevention, data from a total of 200,000 individuals are studied in conjunction. The research will relate genetic and environmental factors to brain changes associated with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, as well as memory function and daily functioning.
This project received funding by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) in 2018.
